みなさまこんにちは、シュラッグ・ケネスと申します。アメリカのワシントン州のモーゼス・レイク市出身です。令和6年8月から八代市役所の国際課で勤務しています。この１年、沢山の方とお会いできる機会があり、色々なイベントにも参加出来ました。今までの八代市での体験と色々な文化の違いをラジオや情報誌などを通じて紹介してきましたが、改めてこのページを通して、生活習慣や文化の違いなど私が体験したことや感じたことなどを紹介させていただきます。どうぞよろしくお願いします。
Hello, everyone, my name is Kenneth Schrag. I’m from Moses Lake, Washington, in the USA. I have been working at Yatsushiro City Hall’s International Relations Division since August 2024. Over the past year, I have had many opportunities to meet people in Yatsushiro and participate in various events. While I have been sharing my experiences in Yatsushiro as well as various comparisons between our two countries via appearances on the radio or in other publications, I’d like to use this page to do so as well. 八代に到着した時、やろうと決めたことの一つは、書道教室に通うことでした。漢字の練習、語学力の強化、日本文化を実際に体験して学ぶこと、そして地元の人々との交流が目的でした。それに加えて、幼いころから美学に関わるものすべてに惹かれ、記号や表記体系に深い関心を抱いていました。
When I arrived in Yatsushiro, one of the things I decided to do was join a Shodo class. It was partially to give me practice writing Kanji, to reinforce my language studies, and partially to learn about and take part in an aspect of Japanese culture, and to associate with local residents. But also because I have always been drawn towards anything dealing in aesthetics, and had a deep seated interest in symbols and writing systems.
神園書道教室に通い始めてもう1年になります。火曜日の夜は、ほとんどの方が仮名書道を練習していますが、漢字を練習している方もわずかにいます。くつろいだ気分で地元の人たちと交流出来る楽しい時間です。たまにはお茶とお菓子を皆でいただく事もあります。
I have been going to Kamizono Shodo Class for just over a year now. Tuesday nights is mostly a group of ladies practicing kana, but there are a few of us learning Kanji. It is a pleasant time to relax, socialize with a few local people, and once in a while, tea and snacks happen to show up.
時には、仕事や生活のストレスから逃れて、とても瞑想的な体験になる一方で、筆や墨が思った通りに動かず、イライラしてしまうこともあります。しかし、それを乗り越えて、時間の経過とともに自分自身の成長を見ることは、とてもやりがいのあることです。
Sometimes it can be very meditative, an escape from the stresses of work an life, but other times the brush or ink doesn't seem to cooperate with you as you would like, causing a lot of frustration. But pushing through that frustration and seeing your own progress over time is all the more rewarding and motivating.
あるプロジェクトで、自分の印鑑を彫る機会がありました。
そこで、自分の名前に合う漢字を探すことにしました。カタカナで書くのは何となく冷たく、「外国人」って呼ばれているような感じで、書道作品には不自然に見えてしまうと私は思いました。もちろん、外国人が漢字で署名することも不自然と思われる事もありますが、少なくとも書道作品にカタカナは場違いに感じます。
For one of our projects, I got the opportunity to carve my own seals. Of course I opted to find Kanji equivalents to my name, as katakana seems somewhat cold, screams "foreigner", and somehow looks illegitimate on a work of Shodo in my opinion. Of course signing my name in Kanji can also be construed as illegitimate, but at least it doesn't look so out of place like katakana does.
この篆書体で印鑑を彫っているとき、この漢字のパーツが私の名前に対応するアルファベットの文字に似ていることに気づきました。思いつきで、私が感じたものを他の人と共有できるようにアニメーションも作成しました。自分の名前の英語の文字がすべてその漢字の中に隠れていると思うと少し運命的に感じます。
When carving the hanko in this specific tensho style, I realized that the individual parts of the Kanji resembled letters in the alphabet corresponding to my name, and after a bit of tinkering, I also created an animation so I could share what I saw with others. It is a bit forced, but you have to admit it kind of works. To think that the English characters of my name are hiding in plain sight in that Kanji makes it feel like a bit of fate is involved. 。
