みなさまこんにちは、シュラッグ・ケネスと申します。アメリカのワシントン州のモーゼス・レイク市出身です。令和6年8月から八代市役所の国際課で勤務しています。この１年、沢山の方とお会いできる機会があり、色々なイベントにも参加出来ました。今までの八代市での体験と色々な文化の違いをラジオや情報誌などを通じて紹介してきましたが、改めてこのページを通して、生活習慣や文化の違いなど私が体験したことや感じたことなどを紹介させていただきます。どうぞよろしくお願いします。
Hello, everyone, my name is Kenneth Schrag. I’m from Moses Lake, Washington, in the USA. I have been working at Yatsushiro City Hall’s International Relations Division since August 2024. Over the past year, I have had many opportunities to meet people in Yatsushiro and participate in various events. While I have been sharing my experiences in Yatsushiro as well as various comparisons between our two countries via appearances on the radio or in other publications, I’d like to use this page to do so as well. 私の出身地：アメリカ合衆国ワシントン州モーゼス・レイク市
まずは私の出身地アメリカのワシントン州のことを紹介したいと思います。ワシントン州はアメリカの北西海岸にあり、カナダとの国境に接していて、多くの有名な会社が拠点を置いています。しかし、それらはすべて州の西側にあります。私の出身地である東側は西側とはかなり違う所です。
First I’d like to introduce my home state, Washington. Washington is on the northwest coast of the USA, sharing the border with Canada, and is home to many famous companies, like Microsoft, Amazon, Starbucks, and Boeing. However these are all on the western side of Washington State. The eastern side where I am from is actually a very different place.
ワシントン州は九州の5倍の広さで、真ん中に位置する大きな山脈が州を東西に分け、東側への雨の多くを遮っています。このため、2 つの地域は完全に異なっています。西側は緑が豊かで、森林に覆われ、雨がよく降る一方で、東側は非常に乾燥しており、ほぼ砂漠のようで、広大な岩だらけの渓谷があります。
Washington State is five times the size of Kyushu, and there is a large mountain range running down the middle of the state which blocks much of the rain to the east side. This makes the two halves completely different, the west being very green, covered in forests and frequent rain, and the east being quite arid, almost desert-like, with vast rocky canyons.

この半乾燥地域の広い盆地の中心に位置する私の故郷は、町の名前の由来となった湖、「モーゼス・レイク」の周囲の土地を占めています。夏にボート、水上スキー、ジェットスキー、釣りなどの水上アクティビティを楽しむのに人気な観光地です。モーゼス・レイクではありませんが、小さい時ワシントン州東部の楽しみの一つは、近くにある他の湖で崖から飛び込むことでした。
My hometown is situated at the center of a large basin in this semi-arid zone, occupying the land surrounding the lake which it is named after, Moses Lake. It is a popular destination in the summertime for water activities such as boating, skiing, jet skiing and fishing. Although not in Moses Lake, one of the things I also enjoyed while growing up in Eastern Washington was travelling to other nearby lakes and going cliff diving!
ワシントン州は熊本県と同様、主要な農業生産地であり、農業生産高は全米第2位です。リンゴが最も有名ですが、サクランボ、ナシ、ブドウ、ラズベリー、ホップ、トウモロコシ、タマネギ、ジャガイモ、小麦もアメリカ有数の生産量を誇ります。モーゼス・レイクの経済も農業が大きな部分を占めており、多くの点で八代市と似ています。親戚にはよく、日本版モーゼスレイクに住んでいると言っています。
Similar to Kumamoto prefecture, Washington is a major producer of agricultural products, and ranks second in the nation for agricultural production. It is most famous for apples, but also produces some of the largest amounts of cherries, pears, grapes, raspberries, hops, corn, onions, potatoes, and wheat in the United States. Agriculture is also a large part of Moses Lake's economy, and it actually resembles Yatsushiro in many ways. I often tell my relatives that I am living in a Japanese version of Moses Lake.
