（4）デニスのコラム「アメリカの新しい祝日」"The USA's New Federal Holiday"

　みなさまこんにちは、デニス・ジョセフィンと申します。アメリカのバージニア州のリッチモンド市出身です。令和元年から現在まで八代市役所の国際課で勤務しています。この3年半、コロナ禍によりイベントなども制限され、皆様とお会いできる機会も少なかったように感じています。これまでラジオや情報誌などを通じて日本とアメリカの違いなどを紹介してきましたが、改めてこのページを通して、生活習慣や文化の違いなど私が体験したことや感じたことなどを紹介させていただきます。どうぞよろしくお願いします。

　Hello, everyone, my name is Josephine Dennis. I’m from Richmond, Virginia, in the USA. I have been working at Yatsushiro City Hall’s International Relations Division since August 2019. Over the past three and a half years, many events have been cancelled or postponed, and I have lost out on opportunities to meet the people of Yatsushiro. While I have made appearances on the radio or in other publications, sharing my thoughts on cultural differences between Japan and the USA, I’d like to use this page to do so as well. ジューンティーンス（6月19日）と独立記念日（7月4日）Juneteenth (June Ninteenth) and Independence Day (The Fourth of July)

　アメリカ最大の祝日はやっぱり「独立記念日」です。アメリカがイギリスから自由を得たことを祝う日で、日本でもよく知られたアメリカの祝日の一つだと思います。一般的には家の裏庭でBBQをしたり、花火をあげたりして過ごしますが、アメリカ人みんながこれを祝うわけではありません。なぜかというと、独立宣言をした年（1776年）には奴隷制度はまだ存在していたため、黒人はまだ自由ではなかったからです。もちろん、アフリカ系アメリカ人の中にも独立記念日を祝う人もいますが、それとは別に自由を祝う祝日があります。

　The USA’s most important holiday is definitely Independence Day. It’s the day the USA declared independence from England, and I think it’s well known as such, even in Japan. Americans usually celebrate it by barbecuing in their back yards and lighting fireworks. But not everyone in the USA celebrates this holiday. I’ll explain. In the year the declaration of independence was made (1776), slavery still existed. Black people were still not free. Of course, there are African-American people that celebrate the Fourth of July, but there’s a more separate holiday to celebrate “independence” for black people in the USA.

　それは、毎年6月19日の「ジューンティーンス」です。「自由の日」とも呼ばれていて、アメリカにいた黒人が奴隷制度から解放されたことを祝う日です。2021年にバイデン大統領が法案に署名し、「ジューンティーンス」は新たな連邦の祝日に制定されました。それまでも、多くの地域で祝っていましたが、祝日として認められていませんでしたので、私も詳しくは知りませんでしたが、祝日なってから初めて「ジューンティーンス」の深い歴史について学ぶことができました。この機会にみなさまにも「ジューンティーンス」について知っていただけると嬉しいです。

　And that holiday is Juneteenth. It’s also called Freedom Day, and is a holiday to celebrate the freedom black people in the USA gained when slavery ended. In 2021, President Biden signed a law that recognizes Juneteenth as a new federal holiday. Juneteenth was celebrated widely throughout the USA, but it was not acknowledged as a holiday by the country until recently. Because it was not recognized by the country, I didn’t know much about the occasion, but now that it is a federal holiday, I was able to learn more about the deep history Juneteenth has. I hope that everyone reading this also takes a chance to learn more about Juneteenth.
