（1）デニスのコラム 「私の出身地を紹介します！」
みなさまこんにちは、デニス・ジョセフィンと申します。アメリカのバージニア州のリッチモンド市出身です。令和元年から現在まで八代市役所の国際課で勤務しています。この3年半、コロナ禍によりイベントなども制限され、皆様とお会いできる機会も少なかったように感じています。これまでラジオや情報誌などを通じて日本とアメリカの違いなどを紹介してきましたが、改めてこのページを通して、生活習慣や文化の違いなど私が体験したことや感じたことなどを紹介させていただきます。どうぞよろしくお願いします。
Hello, everyone, my name is Josephine Dennis. I’m from Richmond, Virginia, in the USA. I have been working at Yatsushiro City Hall’s International Relations Division since August 2019. Over the past three and a half years, many events have been cancelled or postponed, and I have lost out on opportunities to meet the people of Yatsushiro. While I have made appearances on the radio or in other publications, sharing my thoughts on cultural differences between Japan and the USA, I’d like to use this page to do so as well. Hope you enjoy！
私の出身地：アメリカ合衆国、バージニア州、リッチモンド市
まずは私の出身地アメリカのバージニア州のことを紹介したいと思います。バージニア州はアメリカの東海岸の真ん中にあり、首都のワシントンDCのすぐ南です。バージニア州は州産のハムや、ピーナッツ、牡蠣で有名です。
First I’d like to introduce my hometown: Richmond, Virginia. Virginia is in the middle of the east coast of the USA, and is just south of the country’s capital, Washington D.C. Virginia is famous for its ham, peanuts, and oysters.
私がバージニア出身ということで、よく、「あの名曲『カントリーロード』の歌詞に出てくるウエストバージニアですか」と聞かれます。この曲はアニメの「耳をすませば」でも登場しましたね。この曲の英語の歌詞に出てくるウエストバージニアとは、残念ながら私の故郷のバージニア州ではなく、ウエストバージニア州のことで、別の州になります。
As someone from Virginia, I’m often asked this question while in Japan: “Are you from the West Virginia that Country Roads song mentions?” The song is famous here for appearing in the movie “Whisper of the Heart.” The English version of this song’s lyrics include a line mentioning West Virginia, but unfortunately, that is not my home state. West Virginia is a completely different state.
またリッチモンド市を紹介すると、Richmond Hotelや八代市内のゲームセンターを思い浮かべる人も多いですね。リッチモンドという名前の由来ですが、もとはイギリスのリッチモンド・オン・テムズ川の地域から来ているそうです。なぜかというとバージニア州がもともと州になる前はイギリスの植民地だったからだと言われています。
And once I mention Richmond, many people think of the Richmond Hotel chain or a certain game center in Yatsushiro City. The name “Richmond” comes from the area Richmond Upon Thames in England. Because Virginia was originally an English colony before becoming a state.

リッチモンド市で私が一番好きな場所はCary Townというエリアです。その名のとおりCary道路にあり、地元の店がいっぱい並んでいます。例えば、私が好きなGalaxy Dinerというお店ではアメリカ50年代と宇宙のデザインを合わせたような雰囲気の中でハンバーガーやミルクゼーキを提供します。それと数えきれないほどの服を扱う古着屋さん。そして老舗の音楽ショップでよくカセットテープを買っていました。買い物が終わったら、よくByrd Theatreに映画を見に行っていました。土曜日であれば上映直前にオルガン演奏も聴くことができます。
My favorite place in Richmond is the Cary Town area. The area is of course on Cary Street, a road in town, and has many local shops. For example, Galaxy Diner is a restaurant I love for its ‘50s and space themed décor, hamburgers, and milkshakes. And I enjoy the innumerable thrift shops. I used to buy cassette tapes from a long-standing music shop. After finishing shopping, I’d go see a movie at the Byrd Theatre. If it was a Saturday, there would be an organ performance before the movie started.
