デニスのコラム（6）「アメリカの独特な人形：アメリカン・ガール・ドール」
みなさまこんにちは、デニス・ジョセフィンと申します。アメリカのバージニア州のリッチモンド市出身です。令和元年から現在まで八代市役所の国際課で勤務しています。この3年半、コロナ禍によりイベントなども制限され、皆様とお会いできる機会も少なかったように感じています。これまでラジオや情報誌などを通じて日本とアメリカの違いなどを紹介してきましたが、改めてこのページを通して、生活習慣や文化の違いなど私が体験したことや感じたことなどを紹介させていただきます。どうぞよろしくお願いします。
Hello, everyone, my name is Josephine Dennis. I’m from Richmond, Virginia, in the USA. I have been working at Yatsushiro City Hall’s International Relations Division since August 2019. Over the past three and a half years, many events have been cancelled or postponed, and I have lost out on opportunities to meet the people of Yatsushiro. While I have made appearances on the radio or in other publications, sharing my thoughts on cultural differences between Japan and the USA, I’d like to use this page to do so as well. Hope you enjoy!
デニスのコラム（6）「アメリカの独特な人形：アメリカン・ガール・ドール」 The United States' Unique Dolls: "American Girl Dolls"
世界で一番人気の人形「バービー」が映画化され、2023年最高の興行収入を記録しました。アメリカでは「バービー」の他にも、色んなブランドの人形が販売されています。その中の1つに「アメリカン・ガール」人形があります。
The world’s most famous fashion doll Barbie, was turned into a movie and made record box office numbers in 2023. But there are many brands of dolls other than Barbie for sale in the USA. One of them is the American Girl dolls.
「アメリカン・ガール」の特徴は人形に付随する時代小説シリーズがあることです。1764年を代表するネズ・パース族（先住民）の女の子から1980年を代表する宇宙飛行士になりたい女の子まで、20のキャラクターがあり、キャラクターごとに小説シリーズと人形があります。
American Girl dolls are known for their accompanying series of novels. There are over 20 characters, from an indigenous Nez Perce girl from 1764 to a girl who wants to become an astronaut in 1980, with a series of novels about their lives.
私が7歳の時、「アメリカン・ガール」人形の中で一番好きなキャラクターは「キット」でした。彼女は1930年代の代表で、家族とどのように大恐慌(だいきょうこう)を乗り越えるかが小説の主なストーリーです。キットは将来、記者になりたくて、そして今すぐ家族のためにも役立ちたいので、稼ぐために新聞のコンペに参加したり、たまごを売ったりします。私はキットの熱心さに憧れました。
When I was 7 years old, my favorite character out of all the dolls was Kit Kittredge. She represents the 1930s, so the main concern of her novel series is how she and her family live throughout the Great Depression. Kit wants to become a reporter and also help her family, so she enters newspaper competitions to try and win cash prizes, sells eggs for a profit, among other things. I admired her ingenuity.
この時代小説を図書館から借りて読むだけでもキャラクター達に共感することはできますが、もちろん、その他にも関連グッズが「アメリカン・ガール社」からたくさん販売されています。私が子どもの頃、ダイレクトメールで家に届いた「アメリカン・ガール」のカタログを読みながら、欲しかった人形の衣装・家具・アクセサリに次々と丸を付けました。両親は私の「アメリカン・ガール」への熱狂ぶりを見て、ある年のクリスマスにキットの人形をプレゼントとして買ってくれました。
You could borrow these historical fiction novels from the library for free and come to care for the characters, but American Girl dolls’ advertising power was undeniable. I remember marking the many pages of the American Girl doll catalogue that was mailed to my family’s house for every doll outfit, furniture, and accessory that I wanted. Eventually, one Christmas, my parents saw my passion for the brand and I received a Kit doll as a present.
キャラクター1人に6つの小説が創作されました。
今になって「アメリカン・ガール」人形の金額の事実に向き合いました。例えば、多くのバービー人形は＄9（1,500円相当）で販売されています。でも「アメリカン・ガール」人形の場合、どれも＄150（20,000円相当）以上かかります。無計画に買うことはないでしょう。
Now that I’m grown up, I have come face to face with the reality of American Girl dolls’ price. For example, Barbie dolls are usually sold for $9 (about 1,500 yen). But American Girl dolls cost $150 (about 20,000 yen), which isn’t a price you should pay for willy-nilly.
金額の差異の理由の1つは人形の大きさです。バービー人形の高さは28cmですが、「アメリカン・ガール」人形の高さは45cmと、比較的大きいサイズです。また、人形の丈夫さも売りで、金額は高いですが、何世代もお下がりとして妹や娘や姪にあげることができます。
One reason for the difference in their prices is their size: Barbie dolls are 28 cm tall and American Girl dolls are 45 cm tall. And American Girl dolls’ other selling-point is their durability. The price may be high, but you can pass down the doll to your little sisters, nieces, or daughters for generations.
日本での知名度はリカちゃんと比べ物にならないかもしれませんが、少しでも「アメリカン・ガール」人形に興味をもっていただいた方がいればぜひ小説を読んでみてください。
