みなさまこんにちは、デニス・ジョセフィンと申します。アメリカのバージニア州のリッチモンド市出身です。令和元年から現在まで八代市役所の国際課で勤務しています。この3年半、コロナ禍によりイベントなども制限され、皆様とお会いできる機会も少なかったように感じています。これまでラジオや情報誌などを通じて日本とアメリカの違いなどを紹介してきましたが、改めてこのページを通して、生活習慣や文化の違いなど私が体験したことや感じたことなどを紹介させていただきます。どうぞよろしくお願いします。
Hello, everyone, my name is Josephine Dennis. I’m from Richmond, Virginia, in the USA. I have been working at Yatsushiro City Hall’s International Relations Division since August 2019. Over the past three and a half years, many events have been cancelled or postponed, and I have lost out on opportunities to meet the people of Yatsushiro. While I have made appearances on the radio or in other publications, sharing my thoughts on cultural differences between Japan and the USA, I’d like to use this page to do so as well. Hope you enjoy!

アメリカでは11月はネイティブアメリカン遺産文化月間です！国内の色んな団体がネイティブアメリカン（先住民）についての知識と理解を高めるために情報を発信したり、イベントを開催したりします。なので、私も日本語でネイティブアメリカンについてこちらで紹介したいと思います。
November in the USA is National Native American Heritage Month! A variety of organizations in the USA share information and host events about Native Americans in order to raise awareness. So I thought I would also share some info about Native Americans here.
ディズニー映画「ポカホンタス」を見たことはありますか？また、主人公のポカホンタスは実在した人物がモデルとなっていることをご存じでしょうか？ポカホンタスはパウハタン族の酋長の娘でした。映画では彼女はプリンセスとして描かれていますが、パウハタン族ではプリンセスのような立場が実在したかどうか定かではありません。
Have you seen the Disney movie "Pocahontas"? Did you know that the main character Pocahontas was based off of a real person? Pocahontas was the daughter of Chief Powhatan, of the Powhatan Tribe. She is depicted as a princess in the movie, but it's unclear if there was such a position in the Powhatan Tribe.

映画の中ではポカホンタスはJohn Smithと結婚しますが、実際はJohn Rolfeという男と結婚しました。しかし、ディズニー映画のようにロマンス溢れる関係ではありませんでした。それは、第1次アングロ(英国)・パウハタン戦争を終わらせるための政略結婚だったからです。
In the movie Pocahontas marries John Smith, but in reality she married a man named John Rolfe. And it probably wasn't a relationship overflowing with romance either, because the marriage was a strategic part of ending the First Anglo-Powhatan War.

映画の舞台となったジェームズタウンという植民地は歴史村として現在しており、1600年代の街の様子が再現されています。入植者が建設した要塞(ようさい)や家（の複製）を見たり、マスケット銃の空砲を撃ってみたり、畑で種をまいたりできるほか、パウハタン族の住宅と畑（の複製）も見ることができます。そして彼らが当時一本の木でカヌーを作っていた時と同じように、丸太を牡蠣の貝殻で掘る体験をすることもできます。
The setting of the movie, the Jamestown colony still exists today as a historical reconstruction where you can experience life in the 1600s. You can see the forts and homes (reproductions) of the colonists, fire musket blanks, and sow seeds, along with seeing the Powhatan Tribe's homes and fields (reproductions). You can also construct a canoe from a whole tree as the Powahatan Tribe did at the time by carving into the log with oyster shells.

映画「ポカホンタス」はエンターテインメントとしてはいいと思いますが、（曲はすばらしい！）ぜひ本当の歴史を調べてみてください。それがネイティブアメリカン遺産文化月間の狙いです。
The movie Pocahontas can be good entertainment (the songs are amazing!) but please try your hand at researching the real history of the characters. That's the aim of National American Indian Heritage Month.
バージニア州のネイティブアメリカン豆知識
●現在パウハタン連邦は存在しませんが、バージニア州では11の
認定族が存在し、保留地ごとに自治体としての役割を担っています。
