Hello, everyone, my name is Josephine Dennis. I’m from Richmond, Virginia, in the USA. I have been working at Yatsushiro City Hall’s International Relations Division since August 2019. Over the past three and a half years, many events have been cancelled or postponed, and I have lost out on opportunities to meet the people of Yatsushiro. While I have made appearances on the radio or in other publications, sharing my thoughts on cultural differences between Japan and the USA, I’d like to use this page to do so as well. Hope you enjoy!

英語のネイティブスピーカーが和製英語と遭遇したら、混乱します。

今回は、カタカナ語や外来語、和製英語について私が体験したこと、感じたことをお話します。
これから述べる話のように、カタカナの言葉=英語と間違っている人はまだたくさんいると思います。

For this article, I’d like to introduce some situations I’ve had with loan words in Japanese.

Just like in this story, I think there are still a lot of people who mistakenly think katakana words = English.

arubaito

【エピソード1】

高校時代に日本からきた留学生がいました。当時、私は日本語を勉強し始めたばかりでした。彼女も私もお互いの言語を学ぶのが好きだったので、よく一緒に昼ご飯を食べていました。そんなある日、スタバでぶらぶらしていた時に、彼女が英語で「アルバイトしたことある?」と私に聞いてきました。

There was an exchange student from Japan at my high school. I had just started learning Japanese. We both had fun learning about each other’s languages so we often ate lunch together and became friends. Then one day, while we were waiting in line at Starbucks, she asked me in English, “Have you ever had an arubaito?”

実は「アルバイト」は英語ではありません。語源はドイツ語だそうです。よって、アメリカ人(特にドイツ語が喋れない人)に「アルバイト」と言っても分かりません。英語で「アルバイト」は”part time job”と言います。運良く私はその日ちょうど「アルバイト」とは何の意味か日本語の授業で学んだばかりだったので、彼女が本当に聞きたかったことが分かり、あとで彼女に「アルバイト」という言葉は英語じゃないことを教えました。

“Arubaito” isn’t an English word. It actually comes from German. So most Americans (those who don’t speak German) wouldn’t understand what that word means. “Arubaito” in English is “part time job”. Fortunately, I had just learned the word “arubaito” in my Japanese class, so I understood what she really wanted to ask me. But I had to tell her that “arubaito” is not an English word.

sodajuiceA

次に「ジュース」のエピソードを紹介します。Juiceと日本語のカタカナ「ジュース」も意味が異なります。

Here’s another story, about “ジュース.” Juice when used in English differs from when it’s used in Japanese, or katakana.

【エピソード2】

八代市に着任したばかりの頃にパーティーへ誘われたときのことです。ALTの先生の家に10人ほど集まって、お菓子や飲み物を囲んで楽しく話をしていました。そこへ日本人の友達が手にメロンソーダを持って「ジュースを持ってきました!」と言いました。私にはそのことがとても不思議でした。心の中で、「それはjuiceじゃないんだけどなあ…」と思いながら、数日間そのことが頭から離れませんでした。

When I had first arrived in Yatsushiro, I was invited to a party at an ALT friend’s house. About 10 people had gathered, and were enjoying a bunch of snacks and drinks while talking. And when one of the ALT’s Japanese friend arrived, with some melon soda in hand and said, “I brought some ジュース!” In my mind, I kept thinking, “That’s not juice though…” so much that I couldn’t stop thinking about the phrase for days.

数日後、同僚にこのことを伝えたら、「いや、メロンソーダはジュースだよ」と返されて余計にびっくりしたのを覚えています。

A few days later, after mentioning this to my coworkers, they affirmed that melon soda is ジュース and I remember being extremely surprised by this.

日本語と英語には同じ発音でも、どんな物を指すかが違う場合があります。英語のjuiceと日本語のジュースでは、実は対象物が違います。英語でJuiceというのは果物や野菜の「汁」を意味し、果汁50%以上のものだけです。このエピソードのように、メロンソーダを持ってきたら、「それはジュースじゃなくてソーダだよ」と言いたくなります。日本では炭酸飲料のこともジュースと呼ぶようですが、英語で炭酸飲料はsoda(ソーダ)になります。

Even if the pronunciation is the same in Japanese and English, the things the word refers to can be different. In this case, katakana ジュース and English juice refer to different things. Juice refers to the liquid of fruits and vegetables, and only is used with drinks that are at least 50% plant-based. Like in this story, if you bring some melon soda to me, I’ll want to say “That’s not juice, it’s soda.” In Japan, carbonated drinks are considered ジュース as well, but carbonated drinks in English are a separate category: soda.

【エピソード3】

それでは最後のエピソードです。昔、東京で留学していたころ、ホームステイ先からキャンパスまで地下鉄で通学していました。ある日、地下鉄の列車の中に英会話教室の広告を見つけました。広告にはスーツ姿の男性2人が話し合っている写真と、「マンツーマン授業」と書いてありました。それを見た私の第一印象は『男性限定の英会話なの!?授業から女性を排除するの!?』と本当に驚きました。

And here’s one last story. A long time ago, while I was studying abroad in Tokyo, I took the subway from my host family’s house to campus. One day on the subway, I saw an ad for an 英会話 business. In the ad, two men in suits were talking to each other, so the ad was featuring their マンツーマン lessons. My first reaction to this was, “Men-only English classes? Are they seriously excluding women from their courses?”

実は「マンツーマン」という言葉と二人の男性の写真だけが広告に載っているという2つの条件が重なった結果、私は「マンツーマン」という言葉は「男性と男性」という意味だと勘違いました。もし女性の写真が載っていれば勘違いしなかったと思いますが・・・。しばらくたってから、カタカナの「マンツーマン」の意味が「一対一」という意味だと分かりましたが、いまだにあの時見た英会話教室の印象は良くないですね。

The combination of the phrase, and the fact that only men were on the poster led me to believe マンツーマン means “man to man” literally. If the poster had used models that were women to advertise their “man to man” courses I don’t think I would have come away thinking so, but... Somehow, much later I learned that the katakana “man to man” actually means “one on one,” but I still have a bad impression of the English lesson company that I saw way back when.
